Sodium Sulfide

SKU: Sodium Sulfide Category:

Description

Sodium sulfide is a chemical compound with the formula Na2S, or more commonly in its hydrated form as Na2S•9H2O. Both forms are colorless salts that dissolve in water to form highly alkaline solutions.

Sodium sulfide and its hydrates release hydrogen sulfide gas when exposed to moisture in the air, producing a distinct odor similar to rotten eggs. Industrial-grade sodium sulfide is often found as sodium sulfide multi-hydrate (Na2S•xH2O), with a specific weight percentage of sodium sulfide. The most common versions typically contain around 60% sodium sulfide by weight (Na2S•3H2O). Due to the presence of polysulfides, these samples can have a slightly yellowish tint, which is why they are referred to as “sodium sulfide flakes.” However, despite their yellow appearance, they become colorless when dissolved in water.

Sodium sulfide consists of two sodium atoms and one sulfide group (-S). The chemical formula is Na2S. This compound is available as a white powder, yellow flakes, and red flakes, all soluble in water. Sodium sulfide is a crucial chemical in various industries, including chemical manufacturing, textiles, papermaking, water treatment, and others. It is also used as a preservative in some food industries and as a protective agent in leather processing.
