What are mineral salts and what are their uses?

Non-food industrial salts, known as industrial mineral salts, play a significant role in various chemical industries. These substances can be extracted through natural processes or produced in factories through chemical processes. These salts differ from edible salts in many ways, such as purity, composition, applications, etc., and are only referred to as salts due to their visual similarity and crystalline structure. Continuing, we become acquainted with some of the products in this group and their applications:

Sodium Salts

Sodium Chloride (NaCl)

Sodium chloride, commonly known as table salt, is the most widely used substance in this group. Besides its use as table salt, it is also used in the production of other industrial salts. Moreover, it finds various applications in industries such as plastic manufacturing, paper production, and ceramics and tile production.

Sodium Sulfate (Na2SO4)

Sodium sulfate has various applications in industries such as glass, tile, and ceramics production, among others.

Sodium Sulfide (Na2S)

This substance is derived from sodium sulfide and is in the form of yellow flakes, a byproduct of barium carbonate. It is used in industries such as leather production, ceramics, rubber, paper manufacturing, and the extraction of lead and copper in the metallurgical industry.

Barium Salts

Barium Carbonate (BaCO3)

Barium carbonate is primarily used in industries like opal or glass production. It is also a key ingredient in the manufacture of ceramic and tile glazes, and it has other applications such as in the production of chinaware and agricultural pesticides. This substance is obtained from the reaction of barium sulfide, sodium carbonate, and carbon dioxide.

Barium Sulfate (BaSO4)

Barium sulfate, in the form of white crystals, is the primary source of barium and barium compounds. In the industry, there are two types of this substance: synthetic and mineral barium sulfate, with the majority of industrial consumption being in the export-oriented paint industry. Mineral barium sulfate is also used in the production of general-purpose paints. Additionally, high-purity barium sulfate finds applications in medical imaging industries.

Barium Chloride (BaCl2)

This substance, in the form of white crystals, is primarily used for water and wastewater treatment and in the production of alkali chlorides in the chlorine industry. Additionally, it is used in the production of PVC stabilizers.
In this article, we learned about seven commonly used non-edible industrial salts. However, it’s important to note that the variety of mineral salts goes beyond these examples, and they have more limited applications in various industries.

Calcium Chloride (CaCl2)

Calcium chloride, another highly used substance in this group, has various applications such as moisture control, dust control on roads, and as an additive in concrete.

Potassium Chloride (KCl)

Potassium chloride has applications in agriculture for fertilizer production, heavy water purification, pharmaceuticals, and the oil and gas industry, among others.
